April Head of School Letter: Spring Forward

Friday, March 30, 2018

The snow from Nor’easters #3 and #4 is finally melting away, and the crocuses and snow drops are pushing up through the newly revealed soil, especially in the south-facing border by the entrance to the lower school. Red-winged blackbirds are starting to appear and the dawn chorus of black-capped chickadees and tufted titmice is beginning to sing. The Nature Trail is being cleared of winter debris and the wetlands are free of ice. The signs of spring have come to the North Shore and to our campus.

In their theme- and place-based school, your children are equally attentive to the changing of seasons. They returned rested from break and ready to tackle new challenges. Fifth graders, who started the year as lower schoolers, are now on the cusp of beginning their middle school years, and eighth graders are deciding on secondary school choices and preparing to become high schoolers. More immediately, they are anticipating service learning experiences in the Dominican Republic and Washington, DC in a few weeks.

As the wonder of spring unfolds and momentum builds, I invite you to “come out of your cabin” and join together as a community to:

  • Drop the kids for lower school Movie Night and join a concurrent discussion for parents of the book Excellent Sheep on Friday, April 6.
  • Join the discussion to help guide the next five years of GUS at the morning or early evening Long Range Planning meetings on Wednesday, April 11.
  • Share your ideas for new outdoor play spaces on Wednesday, April 18, when we engage all the students during a facilitated, professional design process.
  • Roll up your sleeves and help spruce up the campus at our Spring Work Day, Saturday, April 21, the day before Earth Day.
  • Lace up your sneakers for a fun run in the morning, but save some energy to boogie and bid at GUSFest 2018 on Saturday, April 28.

Not enough GUS for you? Remember Annual Meeting, 40+Forward all-school reunion weekend, Evening with the Graduates, and Graduation. They’re all coming up soon enough! See you there!

40+Forward,

David Liebmann
