EXPLORE@GUS After School Programs

Our classes promise hands-on learning and fun!

REGISTER TODAY to join us in January! Glen Urquhart School after school programs are designed to give children from GUS and across the North Shore a supervised setting to explore and grow through enriching activities. Programs are led by GUS faculty and local vendors. We offer multiple week sessions and one-day workshops to fit your schedule! Our Winter Session is underway... The 6-week Spring Session will run April 1 to May 17 (no classes April 15-19) with registration opening February 15!

Wednesday, February 27 - Good Night Moon Glass Art
3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Preschool to Kindergarten children with a favorite grown-up  $60
Come to a grown-up-and-me workshop and make your own fused glass window pendants... This class will be using the book Good Night Moon for inspiration in making star and moon related pendants and working with North Shore Glass School.

Monday, April 15 - SUMMER @GUS Showcase - Try a sample day of summer camp!
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Kindergarten to Grade 6  $50
Check out a day camp! Children will experience a variety of fun programs including arts, games, explorations, outdoor fun, archery, and swimming too.

 

  • Registration for EXPLORE @GUS is OPEN. Some classes will not run without a minimum of participants.
  • We understand that sometimes families need a little leeway with their schedules... EXPLORE @GUS participants may take advantage of our After Care program before and after their session at no additional cost. After Care is a supervised recreational time that runs 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Care participants are given outside play time, and enjoy board games, artwork, or homework time. We provide a light snack and participants are allowed to bring their own NUT FREE snack.  
  • NEW! GUS will provide van transportation from Beverly Middle School to EXPLORE @GUS 4:00 p.m. classes, Monday through Thursday! Participants will join the After Care program from their arrival at GUS until their 4:00 p.m. EXPLORE @GUS program start to snack, do homework, or participate in activities. This option is just $20 per 7 week session. 
  • Registration is online and the registration deadline is one week before the program begins. Minumum class size is 6 students. Register early to secure your space! WINTER SESSION:
MONDAYS - January 7 to March 4  

Create the Rainbow with Taste Buds Kitchen
3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Grades 1 to 4   $225  
Ever wish you could just taste pink? Taste Buds Kitchen presents color-packed cooking class where we cook up the rainbow. Using vibrant and delicious ingredients and recipes, young chefs will be introduced to a dazzling display of naturally colorful foods, while building their techniques. Facilitated by Taste Buds Kitchen.

Chess Wizards
3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Grades 1 to 5  $185
Enter into the magical and exciting world of chess with Chess Wizards! Young wizards will participate in epic chess games, fun and interactive lessons, tournaments, team matches, trivia and more! Facilitated by Chess Wizards.

American Red Cross Babysitting Course (transportation available from Beverly Middle School)
4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Grades 5 to 8  $165
Designed to help participants develop leadership skills, participants will learn how to keep themselves and others safe, gain useful tools for managing behavior with young children, learn basic child care, and first aid. Facilitated by GUS Faculty Nancy Hartmann, Director of Auxiliary Programs and Kitty Hunt, School Nurse. Both Nancy and Kitty are certified American Red Cross Health and Safety Instructors.

TUESDAYS - January 8 to March 5  

Jazz-Hop with Mini Movers Studio
3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Preschool to Grade 1  $200
A fun and funky combination dance class of Jazz and Hip Hop, Jazz-Hop will have students learning about the technique and terminology of these two energetic styles. Young dancers will have the opportunity to explore Jazz-Hop with their own movement, through improvisational freeze dance, and creation of short dances with their peers. Facilitated by Jackie Bowden of Mini Movers.

WEDNESDAYS - January 9 to March 6  

Annie Jr. Musical Singing + Dancing  CLASS FULL
3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Kindergarten to Grade 5  $175
The sun will come out tomorrow! Please join us in an hour of singing and dancing to the music of the classic American piece, "Annie Jr."! Students will prepare for an end-of-session performance and a chance to join the Childrens' Chorus of the GUS 8th grade production of "Annie Jr." in May. Facilitated by Sarah Bailes, GUS Upper School Music Teacher.

Intro to Sewing with Seamsters Local
3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Grades 2 to 4  $230
In this fun creative class you’ll learn to sew using the sewing machine, and gain new skills in basic design principles, pattern tracing, fabric cutting, hand sewing, and other sewing related activities used to design and construct sewing based projects. Projects may include stuffed animals, bags, applique pillows, room decoration, fashion accessories and more! Facilitated by Seamsters Local.

THURSDAYS - January 10 to March 7 (7 weeks)  REGISTER TODAY

Kickboxing (transportation available from Beverly Middle School)
4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Grades 4 to 8  $200
This class will get your adrenaline up, your heart pumping hard, and teach you some great self-defense techniques! With the music pumping we're going to work out, dance, and hit a real punching bag! Do you have the energy, self-discipline, and passion to try this class? This class will emphasize cardiovascular fitness, strength training, proper stretching techniques, and the principles of self defense. Facilitated by Emily Hobkirk, GUS Spanish Teacher. Emily has experience in teaching American Kenpo Karate to children and cardio kickboxing for adults.  

Woodworking (transportation available from Beverly Middle School)
4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Grades 2 to 5  $205
Do you want to use a hammer, drill, saw, and all sorts of wood tools and learn the basics of how things are made with wood? By the end of class you will have made one or more wooden crafts that you can use in your home or give as a gift and have enough knowledge to create your own projects at home! Facilitated by Dawn Southworth, GUS Art Teacher

Yoga and Meditation
3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Grades 1 to 5  $185
This class is designed to help kids relax, reduce stress, laugh, develop self-confidence, improve flexibility, and challenge themselves after school. Kids will learn breathing exercises, calming techniques, and challenging poses. They will also develop the beginning foundation for a healthy mind, body, and spirit. Facilitated by Elliott Buck, GUS Second Grade Teacher. Elliott holds a "Mindful Educator Essentials" certificate from Mindful Schools and is currently working toward a Mindfulness Certificate at Lesley University.

Wild Adventures with Kestrel Educational Adventures
3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Preschool and Kindergarten  $200
Act out the lives of a different local creatures, and discover how they use their senses. Learn how a pillbug feels, frogs hear, and lots more! Make your own animal footprints and learn to find your way around in the dark with your whiskers. We will even meet some live creatures! Faciltated by Kestrel Educational Adventures.

FRIDAYS - January 11 to March 8 (8 weeks)  REGISTER TODAY

Art Workshop 
3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Grades 5 to 8  $250
A wide variety of disciplines will be offered, including painting, drawing, assemblage, and mixed media. Students will be encouraged to work together, problem solve, and communicate ideas, thoughts, and feelings in a nurturing multidisciplinary studio environment, sharpening both their critical and interpersonal skills. Facilitated by Dawn Southworth, GUS Art Teacher
