Acknowledging Abundance: November Tartan

Dear GUS Community,

As we enter the final stretch of the calendar year, with the winter solstice fast approaching, it is time to reflect on gratitude and community. Gratitude, it has been said, is the key that unlocks a happier and more fulfilling life. It allows us to acknowledge the abundance that surrounds us and fosters a positive outlook. Taking a moment to express gratitude for the simple pleasures in life - a kind word, a warm smile, or a cheerful greeting - can go a long way in brightening our spirits.

In this Tartan, there is a lot to brighten our spirits and warm our hearts. We are grateful for the wonderful philanthropic support of the GUS community, that helped to reach our GUS Fund goal last year. How grateful we are to honor Sandy Thoms and her 36 years of dedicated service as she approaches her well-deserved retirement this spring! Her classroom is a garden well-tended, growing special young people who have developed into confident individuals. Under Sandy’s watchful eye, and with her compassion and conviction, not only her students but also the whole school community, has thrived.

Service and community are important pillars of the GUS experience, as demonstrated by Mrs. Thoms and by our students, past and present. Whether cleaning up beaches, putting on Teddy Bear Day, or lending a helping hand to a classmate, each act of service strengthens the fabric of our community and deepens the bonds that unite us. We definitely felt that at Grandfriends Day as we honored the Veterans in our audience and we are pleased to share Dr. Brian Norwood’s story in this Tartan. Once again, we offer thanks to all veterans for their service.

It does feel as though time is moving quickly. Eighth graders are preparing for their White Shirt projects that will be presented in January, and our whole community is preparing for our Winter Solstice celebration. In this spirit of gratitude, service, and community, let us embrace the upcoming winter solstice and all the joy it brings. May we take this time to appreciate the warmth of our relationships, extend kindness wherever we can, and come together as a community to support and uplift one another, now and always.

Sincerely,
