Last year, my GUS colleague Carol Stewart shared a blog post with me from Londolozi. Londolozi is an online blog whose purpose is to share daily stories from the wilderness of Africa. Carol had recently traveled to Africa with her family and connected with this organization when they stayed at a Londolozi camp site. This most recent posting was titled “Evidence that Nature Makes Us Kinder.” The idea stated in this post, and in the original article published in Greater Good,... Read More

Mission matters. As educators, this is central to our work, but this year, that belief means more to me than ever before. This is an interesting time in our nation’s history. The days are unsettling. Many of us feel we don’t know what to say, what to do, or how to make a difference. But it strikes me that we—this amazing team of educators here at GUS—are among the lucky ones. We can nourish our hope for a better world every day by digging deeper and pushing farther to... Read More

[video:https://vimeo.com/237969553] Glen Urquhart School fifth graders worked at The Food Project’s farm in Wenham this week, harvesting peppers and beets and transporting pumpkins. Ben and Miriam, the students' farmer-educators on the trip, work full-time for The Food Project, including in the GUS campus greenhouse as part of an ongoing school/organization partnership. They guided participants' labor, taught students about irrigation and staggered planting, while... Read More

Artwork by Morgan Brown, 7th Grade GUS has maintained two honey bee hives adjacent to the greenhouse for a decade. I think of those bees and their hive like school. Busy with purposeful activity, rooted on this beautiful campus, and taking regular forays to explore the environs and ecosystems of the North Shore, GUS students are busy bees! Their treasure is much more than the sweet liquid gold we’ll harvest next week. It’s the lifelong richness of learning. GUS is a safe place... Read More

Glen Urquhart School, the independent, K-8 school in Beverly Farms, welcomes the community to a free screening of “Beyond Measure,” the documentary follow-up to the award-winning “Race to Nowhere.” The event will be held at the GUS campus, in the upper school, on Wednesday, October 18th at 7:00 p.m. “Beyond Measure” follows public schools across the country as they take matters into their own hands, innovating from the inside. By spotlighting success stories... Read More

[video:https://vimeo.com/234894210] Celebrating both the International Day of Peace and the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, Head of School David Liebmann led our community of students and teachers in embracing peace within oneself by sharing a moment of mindful silence. We followed this reflective moment by singing and signing John Lennon’s iconic peace anthem “Imagine.” Throughout this past week, students created pinwheels for peace. Led by upper school teacher Christine... Read More

This week in la clase de español, lower school students learned about la paz, or peace. We learned how to say the theme of this year’s International Day of Peace: respeto, seguridad, y dignidad para todos (respect, safety, and dignity for all). We talked about how each of these ideas promotes peace, and we defined what peace means for each of us. I wanted to highlight for families and friends of lower school students our discussion about dignidad, dignity, for all. I defined... Read More

The 2017–2018 school year marks the 40th anniversary of Glen Urquhart School. Originally founded by Lynne Warren as the North Shore Middle School in 1977, the fledgling enterprise moved to our permanent home in 1982 and soon thereafter became Glen Urquhart School. GUS has inhabited our campus since then, transforming into a school what had been the Spaulding brothers’ formal gardens (1907–1916), the Burrage greenhouses (1916–1939), and the Halifax Garden Company’s... I met an alumna in early May from the class of 1986. She remembers the days when Glen Urquhart School was the fledgling North Shore Middle School in a church basement. Her daughter will be ready for kindergarten in another two years, and she stopped by to find out if GUS was still GUS. “This was the best school I ever attended,” she remarked, “and that was true for my sister, too.” Another alumnus from the class of 1990 wrote me from Tennessee. He was considering a move... Read More
