Backyard Growers (ages 6-9) Cost: $235 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Lead Facilitator: Backyard Growers (backyardgrowers.org)
Spend a week this summer growing, harvesting, and cooking food right in the gardens at Glen Urquhart! Every day, we'll explore a different part of growing food from the soil and everything living in it to seeds, pollinators, and what plants need to grow. Enjoy the gorgeous weather AND learn to make delicious healthy snacks all while learning how to grow food and how our food system works in Cape Ann and beyond!
Scratch Programming (ages 8 - 11) Cost: $240 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Facilitator: Beth Riley (GUS Director of Technology)
With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations and share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch programming helps young people to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively - essential skills for life in the 21st century. Block coding can also be used with Scratch JR and several robotic devices. Scratch is a project of the LifeLong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab.
Being Animals (ages 4-7) Cost: $200 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Lead Facilitator: Kestrel Educational Adventures (kestreleducation.org)
Experience the world through the eyes, ears, nose and paws of a different animal each morning. Start the morning with animal stories at our meeting circle, then begin the day's ramblings. Search the woods and wetlands for food that animal might eat, learn to move like the animal, and make a nest or a den. Follow tracks and signs, and see if we can find and observe the animals themselves!
We learn about local animals by imagining we are those animals. The morning is filled with wild explorations, games, challenges, stories, and a bit of free play. We might walk like a raccoon and learn to catch small fish, learn to be alert like deer, or hide our nests like finches. Each day holds surprise and wonder.
