2018 Summer Enrichment Course Information

WEEK 1:  June 25 – June 29  REGISTER TODAY!

Coding + Robotics  (ages 7-9) Cost:  $240
9:00 a.m to Noon (afternoon Camp Stay option)
Lead Facilitators:  Maggie Clark (GUS 2nd grade teacher) and Laura Doyle (GUS 4th grade teacher)

This fun and interactive program will encourage your child to design and express themselves through coding and sharing games and challenges with each other. We will then apply our coding techniques to our robots, using LEGO WeDo 2.0 kits and other LEGO educational resources. This one-week program is offered multiple times this summer. Each week the challenges and projects will be adjusted to keep the fun fresh for children who choose to come to more than one session.


Dabbling in the Arts (ages 5-7) Cost: $225
9:00 a.m. to Noon (Make it a full day by adding on the afternoon Camp Stay option)
Lead Facilitator: Emily Hobkirk (GUS Lower School Spanish Teacher)

Emily has years of camp experience and is known for the fun she brings to after school and vacation programs. Participants will enjoy their mornings being creative with different crafts, enjoying movement with dance, and fun with drama games. You can sure “Señorita Emilia” will also integrate a pinch of Spanish Immersion!


Chess Wizards (ages 9-13) Cost $240
Noon to 4:00 p.m. (Includes swimming or camp choice from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.)
Make it a full day by adding on the morning Camp Stay option!

Join us this summer for tons of challenging chess lessons, exciting games, and cool prizes. You'll improve your chess skills, meet new friends, and work out your most powerful muscle–your brain! Our camps include fun team chess games (like bughouse), recess time (of course), snacks, tournaments, and puzzles. Each camper receives a T-shirt, trophy, and puzzle folder. Unleash your brain power and spend part of your vacation with Chess Wizards!

Each day at 3:00 p.m. participants will join SUMMER@GUS day camp for an opportunity to go swimming at Bennett Center or to stay at camp and enjoy an art or outdoor game choice. Pick up is between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m.


Dig in with Backyard Growers (ages 8-11) Cost: $235

Spend a week this summer growing, harvesting, and cooking food right in the gardens at Glen Urquhart! Every day, we'll explore a different part of growing food from the soil and everything living in it to seeds, pollinators, and what plants need to grow. Enjoy the gorgeous weather AND learn to make delicious healthy snacks all while learning how to grow food and how our food system works in Cape Ann and beyond!

 

WEEK 2:  July 9 – July 13  REGISTER TODAY!

Being Animals (ages 4-7) Cost: $200
9:00 a.m. to Noon (Make it a full day by adding on the afternoon Camp Stay option!)
Lead Facilitator: Kestrel Educational Adventures (kestreleducation.org)

Experience the world through the eyes, ears, nose, and paws of a different animal each morning. Start the morning with animal stories at our meeting circle, then begin the day's ramblings. Search the woods and wetlands for food that animal might eat, learn to move like the animal, and make a nest or a den. Follow tracks and signs, and see if we can find and observe the animals themselves!

We learn about local animals by imagining we are those animals. The morning is filled with wild explorations, games, challenges, stories, and a bit of free play. We might walk like a raccoon and learn to catch small fish, learn to be alert like deer, or hide our nests like finches. Each day holds surprise and wonder.

Fashion Fusion  (ages 8 – 10) Cost:  $225
9:00 a.m. to Noon (Make it a full day by adding on the afternoon Camp Stay option!)
Lead Facilitator:  Amy Billings (GUS kindergarten teacher)

Transform thrift shop finds into chic runway showstoppers, recycling old materials and castoffs into exciting and unique creations! We will turn sweaters into hand warmers, skirts into bags, gowns into cute summer dresses, and swatches of fabric into belts and other accessories. Budding fashion designers will practice a variety of skills, including operating a sewing machine, hand sewing, safety pinning, and taping.
 

Coding with HATCH AMERICA (ages 8-13) Cost: $240
Noon - 4:00 p.m. (Includes swimming or camp choice from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.)

We make coding fun! Choose from hundreds of fun projects with themes based on Disney, Star Wars, Harry Potter, sports, design, and many more subjects. You will work with Hatch America coaches in a 6-to-1 student-to-coach ratio, learning and practicing coding. Hatch utilizes a web-based online platform accessible from home too! Outdoor recreation time is provided mid-morning.

Each day at 3:00 pm participants will join SUMMER@GUS for an opportunity to go swimming at Bennett Center or to stay at camp and enjoy an art or outdoor game choice. Pick up is between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m.

Backyard Growers (ages 6-9) Cost: $235

Scratch Programming (ages 8 - 11) Cost: $240

Facilitator: Beth Riley (GUS Director of Technology)

With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations and share your creations with others in the online community. Scratch programming helps young people to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively - essential skills for life in the 21st century. Block coding can also be used with Scratch JR and several robotic devices. Scratch is a project of the LifeLong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab.


Dancing in Nature  (ages  9–11) Cost:  $225
9:00 a.m. to Noon (Make it a full day by adding the afternoon Camp Stay option!)
Lead Facilitator:  Melodie Jeffery-Cassell (GUS dance teacher and Boston Ballet faculty)

The GUS summer dance program is designed to facilitate the enjoyment of dance within a supportive and fun environment. Enjoy exploring different forms of dance in our beautiful adjacent woodlands. Participants will create their own dances using their favorite form of dance in small groups within their chosen natural environment. Parents will be invited for a final performance and our dancers will create their own video to share with friends and family. If you enjoy dancing along the trail with friends, this program is just for you!

This program provides mornings filled with outdoor adventure! Participants will have the opportunity to build outdoor shelters, enjoy campfire cooking, score a bullseye at Archery, visit La Vida’s High Ropes Course, paddle board with Coast to Coast, and explore the rock formations within the Beverly Commons. Bring on your enthusiasm for lots of outdoor fun!
 

WEEK 5:  July 30th – August 3rd  REGISTER TODAY!

Awesome Animation! (ages 7-9) Cost: $240
9:00 a.m. to Noon (Make it a full day by adding the afternoon Camp Stay option!)

Have you ever wanted to make your own animated movie? Have you ever made a fun story using your LEGOs, clay, Playmobil toys, or drawing pictures? In this course, we will use real movie-making techniques to film our own short animated movies. We will learn about story boarding and stop-motion animation, making our own movies!


Games Galore! (ages 10-13) Cost: $225

Have fun with friends enjoy a wide variety of creative games! Colin is a camp favorite when it comes to bringing fun to program! The list is long...survivor, GAGA, whiffle ball, frisbee challenge, sardines, archery, soccer fun, basketball, and more! If you like to move...this program is for you!

Fencing  (ages 7-13) Cost:  $225
9:00 a.m. to Noon (Make it a full day by adding the afternoon Camp Stay option!)
Lead Facilitator:  Coach Jack Mullarkey of 3MB Fencing

Jack is a 4-time New England Interscholastic Champion, 2-time Brass City Champion, a former New England Men’s Foil Champion named to the Under 20 USA Men’s Foil Team for world championship in Madrid, Spain. Jack was invited 7 times to compete in the Martini & Rossi World Championships in Men’s Foil.

Whether it’s light sabers in Star Wars or broadswords in Braveheart, young people and adults are fascinated by the movements and excitement of fencing and are eager to learn this original modern, Olympic Sport!  Fencing supports the development of hand, foot, and eye coordination, which is great cross-training for other sports, such as hockey, lacrosse, and soccer.  Join us for an introduction to fencing. All levels are welcome. Equipment is provided.

Registration Information

Register today for SUMMER@GUS online at our website glenurquhart.campbrainregistration.com. Once you have an account, you can register for all of Glen Urquhart School’s auxiliary programs, including SUMMER@GUS, vacation programs, and our after school GUS+ community programs. When you register, you will be asked for a $100 deposit for each week you are enrolling your camper. All discounts will be applied by the director of auxiliary, and you will be alerted by an email with an updated invoice. All balances must be paid in full by June 1st. If space is available, campers may register after June 1st but will not be eligible for discounts.

For any cancellations after May 1st, we will retain the $100 weekly deposit. After June 1st, there are no refunds for cancellations.

If you need to change your weeks or switch a program, we are happy to accommodate you. For example, if you register for day camp and your child discovers a friend is attending a Summer Enrichment course, you can move your child to that program. Please email Nancy with any requests at nhartmann@gus.org.

Extended Care and transportation services can be added at any time.
