Third Grade Arcade

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

Last Friday, the third grade classroom was transformed into a penny arcade, filled with cardboard contraptions assembled with tape and string and the sounds Kerplunk! and Ding-Ding! Third grade students welcomed their lower school classmates in to play a variety of handcrafted arcade games. The energy was electric—even though no electricity was used to power the games. Over the past few weeks, third graders have been busy strengthening their collaboration, negotiation, design, and building skills, while they worked together in groups of two and three to create try-your-luck games out of the materials gathered in the GUS maker space. With boxes and cups and golf balls and rings, students realized their shared visions and dazzled their visitors with some old school, game time fun.
