Derek was not only a proud Glen Urquhart School parent but also a dedicated and successful President of the Board of Trustees, serving from 1997-2001.

The fund, created by Derek’s charitable bequest, was made in lasting honor of the Cavanaugh Family’s time spent celebrating and encouraging the GUS community of teachers, students, and friends. Derek’s children Jake, Jess, and Laura have thoughtfully stewarded their father’s gift, and they are happy their family can help make a difference for GUS today and into the future. The purpose of The Cavanaugh Family Fund, in broad terms, is to help ensure that the GUS community; its traditions, and its faculty, continue to be well supported. This fund will allow for maximum flexibility in helping GUS attract and retain talented and dedicated faculty and staff, as well as to help meet any special or pressing needs of the GUS faculty and staff community.

Derek Cavanaugh’s leadership and support of GUS truly represents the school motto, ‘Mean well, Speak well, Do well.’ We are honored by his thoughtful gift and take inspiration from his commitment to Glen Urquhart School. I believe this gift will work powerfully alongside the Raymond Nance Fund to support and retain our talented faculty, just as the two worked so well together as Head of the Board and Head of School. It is a wonderful testament to community, partnership, and commitment that makes GUS such a special place.
