Henrietta Lacks: Grade 7

Presented by: Loralei Blume + Maggie Miller

In science class we created graphic novels based on the story of Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta Lacks was a black woman who lived in the 1940s and was diagnosed with cervical cancer. When she went to receive treatment at one of the only hospitals that treated black people, they extracted some of her cells without her consent.

After she passed away, they discovered that her cells duplicated every 24 hours.

Our graphic novels represent the story of her cells helping cure diseases around the world.

We also created a music piece to go along with the graphic novels. We were instructed to create a solemn tune to her sad story. However, the music wasn't just sad, it was hopeful for the millions of people she saved around the world.
