GUS Beginning Band

Dear GUS Families,

We are currently in the process of setting up the GUS beginning band, for students in grades 4-8. We will meet on Thursday mornings at 7:30 a.m. in the upper school, starting October 19. If your child would like to be involved, or if you have any questions, please email me at rnovack@gus.org.

Sincerely,

Ray Novack

GETTING STARTED

In order to participate in the instrumental program, parents will need to provide an instrument in good working condition (if it’s used, I would like the chance to check it out!). Private lessons are always encouraged, but optional. As part of the Beginning Band rehearsals, I will teach the following instruments: flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, electric bass, and percussion. We cannot teach piano, guitar, violin, drum set, or cello in the beginner’s band.

BUYING OR RENTING

There are many instrument companies in Massachusetts that offer a rent-to-own program, or the option to purchase an instrument new. Parents may choose any reputable dealer, however, the closest to GUS is Music and Arts in the TJ Maxx plaza on Rt. 114 in Peabody (978-532-3380).

Parents who would rather be contacted directly by a music company can call K & C Music in Norwood (781-769-6520). I worked with them for 35 years while at Beverly High School, and the company provides delivery service to the north shore. They have new and used instruments.

Camarda Music over in Salem MA provides similar service as well (978-744-7115).

For drummers: The student’s initial purchase would be a practice pad, sticks, and a book. Students will use the GUS drums at rehearsals but are encouraged to use the practice pad at home (you will thank me later!). For rehearsals, they should just bring their sticks and books. Locally, check out Music And Arts (see above) and also Guitar Center on Rt. 114 in Danvers. (978-777-1950).

PURCHASING A USED INSTRUMENT

If you need help finding a good used instrument I have numerous contacts on the north shore and can probably obtain a reputable brand in good working order for a reasonable price. There is also the possibility of GUS providing a few used band instruments. I have collected a few with the sole purpose of getting them into beginner’s hands for the first year of instruction only. Let me know if you are interested.
