What can school be?

challenging

Our program is built on posing questions, making meaning, and solving problems creatively. How does one discipline inform another? Where do literature, science, mathematics, language, music, art, and history intersect? This integration is the essence of our interdisciplinary curriculum.

personal

Children discover how they, as students, relate to learning. No classroom project is complete until our students have reflected on what they learned, where they struggled, and how they soared. Understanding how they learn propels GUS students to develop their own thinking and articulate what they know about both the curriculum and themselves.

collaborative

From the classroom to the playground, and from the athletic fields to the stage, students, faculty, family, friends and neighbors alike experience the power of coming together - and how that impacts learning and development.

fun

GUS was founded in 1977 by a group of parents who wanted something deliberately different for their children - a learning environment that would engage them physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Part of that mission involves erasing the boundaries between the classroom and the world around us - and fully embracing play as an essential part of our day.

joyful

Joy fuels curiosity, the key driving force behind exploration and discovery. At GUS, our students delight in discovery, in taking chances, in sharing adventures and accomplishments, and in play. Our joyful learning environment allows our students to feel safe and inspired to grow - not just academically - but emotionally and socially.

And so much more…

The GUS curriculum integrates academic skill development, experiential learning, and social-emotional understanding in a child-centered, challenging, yet joyful, environment. Our hands-on approach to education develops students who are curious, engaged, and determined to make the world a better place.
