Nature Notes

When she first learned we wouldn’t be coming back to campus this spring, Ms. Buck went for a walk.

She was thinking about how much she was going to miss her second graders, and decided to write them a note. She gathered some sticks, and wrote out “miss you.” She had so much fun creating this ‘nature note’ she decided to bring it to her students. When they’re at school, second graders spend a lot of time doing careful noticing and mindful walking while on the nature trail. Ms. Buck recognized that creating nature notes would not only be a great way to get students outside, but also help connect them to the mindful activities they’re used to at school.

Since launching with second grade, Coach Barton has joined in on the fun too! She’s been busy inspiring upper schoolers to join in on the fun, and sharing nature notes of her own. So far, we’ve amassed quite the collection of work from students, faculty, and family members alike!

Join the fun:

Make creative pictures/notes through objects that you find in nature (pinecones, acorns, pine needles, seaglass, shells, leaves etc.). Objects have to be on the ground, always remember to respect nature and not rip off bark, pull things up from roots, etc. Create what you want, with what you want. Nature notes can take any form!
