Bread Day 2022

Dear GUS families,

We are looking forward to Bread Day this year! This is a community event meant for students to share with their partners. While parents are welcome to attend, there is no expectation that they will. Bread Day takes place on the Friday before Thanksgiving as a simple celebration of this culturally prominent and commonly shared food. Families are invited to bake or contribute breads from their family’s heritage. Learn more about Bread Day, and other GUS traditions here.

Baking for Bread Day

Below are some guidelines so we can all be compliant with the updated GUS Nut Policy (see page 38 of the Parent Student Handbook), since all items will be shared. Please drop off your baked goods on Friday, Nov 18, 2022, between 8:00-8:15 a.m. at the Braemar front entrance.

The Basics

  • Families are asked to bring in breads that represent their heritage

  • All Bread Day items must be accompanied by a nut-free ingredient list.

  • All ingredient lists will be reviewed by Nurse Kitty before items are served.

  • You can be “Pre-approved” by sending the item name and ingredient list to Nurse Kitty at kmhunt@gus.org.

  • There will be a “Speedy check-in” location for pre-approved items.

Ingredient Lists

ALL items must be accompanied by a nut-free ingredient list that is firmly attached. Items cannot be served if there are nuts or nut products on the ingredient list. This includes both peanuts and tree nuts, and nut products such as nut butters, nut extract, nut oils, nut-based milks, etc. Remember to also include ingredient lists for anything going into the baked item that’s not a single ingredient like flour, yeast, or eggs. For example, Earth Balance buttery spread (Palm Fruit, Canola, Soybean, Flax, Olive Oil, Filtered Water, Salt, Natural Flavor, etc.)

Baking Nut-Free

Your kitchen does not have to be a “nut-free facility” to participate in baking for Bread Day! Reasonable care with clean utensils, surfaces and baking equipment is adequate.

“Pre-approved Check-in” of your baked item!

If possible, please send the ingredient list, with the name of your baked item to Nurse Kitty at kmhunt@gus.org. Many people choose to send a simple close-up snapshot of the ingredient list(s). We will quickly check in your “pre-approved” item when you drop it off (in the Braemar kitchen) at these times:
