GUS Honey from Beverly Bees!
GUS honey is now available for purchase from our friends at Beverly Bees!
For the last two years, Brian Deeley from Beverly Bees has helped us to ‘host a hive’ on the GUS campus. Brian was recently on campus to attend to the hive, and had this update:
“Last summer and fall were very dry, and were followed by a long, cold winter. Across the country, a record number of bee colonies were lost, including locally here in Massachusetts. Many colonies that survived were weak coming into the spring. The hive at GUS was set up well to survive the winter and produced an above-average amount of honey. Approximately 70 lbs of honey were produced from the hive at GUS (of which the bees keep most of it!).
During spring cleanouts, we disassemble the entire hive, replace any damaged equipment, and restock hives that did not survive with new bees. Bees are very clean, organized creatures by nature, but in the winter, they do not have a lot of opportunity to fly and clean out the hive, so we help them by removing dead bees and debris that may have gotten into the hive. We arrange the frames and supers, ensuring they are set up for rapid expansion in the spring. To start, we will have one or two large supers (bee boxes), but as soon as the spring nectar flow hits, we will add three more smaller supers to collect honey. We are happy spring is finally here, and so are the bees!”
Did you know our bees travel up to five miles to forage? If you live nearby, help support the hive by avoiding chemical lawn treatments.
