January Message from HOS
Dear GUS Friends and Family,
January is a good moment to pause — long enough to notice what’s been working, and just briefly, before we dive back in. One thing I’m always struck by at Glen Urquhart School is how naturally learning spills beyond classroom walls. As you’ll see throughout this issue, the outdoors at GUS isn’t a special event or a once-in-a-while treat. It’s woven into daily life across campus and across subjects. When rubber boots are as essential as pencils, it’s a clear signal that learning here is active, curious, and deeply connected to the world around us.
That same spirit shows up everywhere — from imaginative play in the forest, to fifth graders negotiating fairness and responsibility through fort-building, to seventh graders discovering that math, business, and even commission can come to life through a gingerbread house. You’ll also see it in how we extend learning beyond campus: partnering with Green Beverly to compost with intention, celebrating alumni like Dylan Comb whose work reflects the curiosity nurtured here, and launching Curious by Nature, our new GUS podcast, to share the stories that make this place so special.
At its heart, this kind of learning isn’t just about nature—it’s about community, stewardship, and helping students see the value in all things. As we begin the new year, I’m grateful for the many ways our students, faculty, families, and alumni continue to bring that mission to life — with energy, care, and just the right amount of muddy joy.
Warmly,
