I have taught math at Glen Urquhart School since 2011. I love teaching math, especially making connections to real life experiences. I work to connect the math curriculum to social justice, but sometimes in class I announce: we’re not doing math today, we’re going to learn about how the Transatlantic Slave Trade is connected to racism and white privilege.

Alumni speakers are a treasured and impactful annual tradition at GUS graduation. Alumni speakers are always selected from the class that was graduating themselves as eighth graders when the current eighth grade class was in Kindergarten. This year’s alumni speakers were Cameron Kirwin ’15 and Justin McNiff ’15.

Over the years, locations have ranged from Guatemala and the Dominican Republic to Navajo Nation, Appalachia, Florida, and, more recently, to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Washington, D.C.

I’ve been thinking a lot about learning and making mistakes. Maybe it was watching the 8th grade in The Little Mermaid? There is a girl who makes a seemingly big mistake, but also rights the wrong and saves the day. I keep thinking about how our children crave independence and how incredibly scary that is for us as parents.

Katherine attended GUS for sixtht through eighth grade, graduating in 2004. After GUS, she went on to The Governor’s Academy, and on to Bentley University, where she graduated in 2012.
